What is actually tested

Two skill areas, roughly 20 percent of Reading and Writing

Expression of Ideas is the smallest domain by weight, but rewards a specific, learnable skill more directly than almost any other question type on the test.

SKILL AREAS

What these questions actually ask

  • Rhetorical synthesis
  • Transitions

Rhetorical synthesis questions give bullet point notes and ask which sentence best accomplishes a stated goal. Transition questions ask for the word that correctly connects two ideas, based on the precise logical relationship between them.

WHY STUDENTS LOSE POINTS

Tone is not the test, logic is

The most common mistake is choosing a transition that fits the general tone of a passage rather than the specific logical relationship between two sentences, addition, contrast, cause and effect, sequence, emphasis, or example. Naming the relationship first, before looking at answer choices, is the single biggest accuracy improvement available here.

How we teach this domain specifically

Matching precise language to precise logic

We diagnose Expression of Ideas on its own, then build practice around the specific logical relationships a student keeps confusing, often contrast with cause and effect, or addition with emphasis. Score well, and the next set raises the difficulty. Struggle, and we repeat the relationship at the same level until naming it becomes automatic.
